Public spaces can often create conflicting opinions. Yet no better opportunity for understanding exists than these tangible places serving as intangible forums for discussion. Historic sites in particular, layered with dozens of interpretations, remind us of how powerfully our remembered pasts shape our present identities. How we handle these evocative places, hopefully with collaboration and integration, captures how we consider each other, and how we may find empathy, honesty, and complexity.
